Title
Belfast NDVI 2018 (06-2018)
Abstract

The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a processing technique that can be applied to remotely sensed data to assess the amount of ground  vegetation in an area (Trees, open green spaces/parks and gardens). This analysis  is carried out using opensource data from the Sentinel 2A satellite system.

Average NDVI values have been calculated for each of the wards of the city. The wards are trimmed to only include areas identified as part of the Belfast settlement area by existing area plans.

Lower average (mean) NDVI values sugguest less vegetation present in a ward area, higher values sugguest more vegetation present. The imagery used was collected in June (high vegetation growth period/season).

Generally very low values of NDVI (0.1 and below) correspond to bare areas of rock, sand, snow, water bodies and built up areas. Moderate values represent shrub, grasslands, uplands & mixed veg/urban growth (0.2 to 0.3), while high values indicate dense vegetation cover, forest/woodland canopy, improved farmland, large urban green space areas and forest (0.6 to 0.8). The higest values  (1) often indicate healthy tropical forest where it is present.
